I took these photos a few days after taking part in a Climate Change Photography workshop, which was run by the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD). In the workshop, Olaf Kuhlke, who works with MCAD, talked about some of the effects of climate change, big and small, and how to capture these effects in a picture. His first example was a cemetery that is close to flooding. Climate change has caused the water levels to rise.
These photos were taken January 28th on Lake Minnewaska. I went out on the lake ice fishing with my grandpa, mom, and brother while visiting my grandparents. We’d been planning on going out ice fishing much earlier in the year but the ice wasn’t thick enough yet.
Lake Minnewaska is near Glenwood, Minnesota, and is a popular fishing spot in both summer and winter. There hasn’t been as many fish houses on the lake due to the unusually warm weather and thin ice. This time of year, just about everyone in town and many from out of town have their fish houses on the lake. Now, only people with fish houses small enough to not break through the ice are out on the lake. This winter there’s been an unusually little amount of snow and ice, both on the lake and in general.
