Greenhouse/Abbey Energy Solar Farm
Sustainability efforts at Saint John’s include using the sun to produce food and electricity. The Eco Houses at SJU manage a winter green house in an effort to provide locally grown produce to dining services. The 4 acre solar farm provides over 4% of Saint John’s electricity needs on an annual basis. This tour will include the greenhouse and the solar farm.
The Saint John’s Pottery/Abbey Woodworking
There is a strong history at Saint John’s of using the natural materials found in the area for both functional and artistic purposes. The sustainable logging program harvests trees from the forests of the Abbey Arboretum and the woodshop turns the wood into furniture on campus such as chairs and desks. The pottery studio utilizes local resources and sustainable methods to create their pottery. This tour will highlight the woodshop and pottery studio.
