Emily Giere went to New London-Spicer Schools where she participated in the YES! program from 2017-2019, as a middle school and high school student.
The main projects Emily worked on included changing the light bulbs in the school parking lot to LED and putting together a Community Climate Convening to help members of the community understand what local problems were occurring in relation to climate change.
Currently, Emily is finishing up her generals at Ridgewater College in Willmar, MN for a degree in Biology and plans to pursue a career in the medical field.
Emily explains that YES! changed her view on a variety of things. She said “YES! did change my outlook on having to take some science classes that might have seemed irrelevant at the time but after YES! I could finally understand how and why they were so important” and “I think YES! also changed my outlook on a lot of different issues pertaining to climate change.”
What Emily enjoyed most during her time in YES! was the appreciation from her community. She stated, “My favorite part of YES! was seeing how much the community cares and is willing to change for the better.”
Emily believes the YES! program is valuable and encourages students to join! She said, “I personally think that any student given the opportunity to join such an eye-opening experience should definitely give it a go.”
Thank you so much for sharing, Emily! We are excited to see what Emily continues to accomplish after participating in the YES! program.
