YES! Alumni Spotlight: Nathan McMullen

Nathan McMullen is an alumnus of the inaugural year of the Sleepy Eye YES! team. Some of the main focuses during his time on the team were researching different ways to reduce school energy consumption and paper use. According to Nathan, his participation in YES! helped to define his passion for natural resources and renewable energy. He continued his education at South Dakota State University and graduated with a degree in Agricultural Education.

He now teaches at the very same high school that he attended-Sleepy Eye Public High School. Nathan notes that as an Agriculture teacher, he has the privilege of educating students about his passion for conservation in the agriculture industry. He enjoys getting students “engaged in learning more about the science and application of green and sustainable energy. As a current teacher at Sleepy Eye, I am continuing my involvement in the program with the YES! Team’s advisor, Deb Reinarts, to help them, wit h the assistance of the students from the FFA program, build the Honey Bee houses for the pollinator project at the Sleepy Eye Golf Coarse. I hope to see the partnership continue to grow  as we strive to make a positive difference for our community’s environment.”

His favorite part of the YES! program was attending events such as the Fall Summit where he was able to learn from other students and take that knowledge back to his own school.
