YES! is excited to announce a collaboration with Climate Generation: A Will Steger Legacy (Climate Generation) through the generous support from the McKnight Foundation to bring climate literacy to YES! students across greater Minnesota. YES! students are embarking on a journey to gather information about their local communities and what they can do to be part of the solution to the effects of climate change.
Climate Generation has already been a big hit with YES! students and coaches at both YES! 2015 Fall Summit events (held at Saint John’s University on September 30th and at Laurentian Environmental Center on October 14th). Kristin Poppleton (Director of Education) and Jenna Totz (Curriculum Coordinator) provided an engaging keynote entitled “Climate Change in Minnesota” and helped the students to better understand the science behind climate change and what they can do to reduce their impact on the planet. When event participants were surveyed on what they liked best about the events, many commented “The opening climate change keynote!”
Throughout the school year, YES! will combine our expertise in project planning along with Climate Generation’s knowledge on climate change to bring about energy action projects that students can learn while doing! Also, students will have the opportunity to host a climate change community event tailored to their specific region to raise awareness about climate adaption and mitigation strategies. YES! and Climate Generation hope this all adds up to building resilient communities across Minnesota!
