The Glencoe-Silver Lake YES! Team along with Coach Mike Sundblad attended Climate Generation’s West Metro Convening on November 12, 2015. As an added treat, they brought last year’s supermileage car to showcase and use as a visual educational tool for the crowd during the convening’s resource fair. Many attendees initially thought the team was in college and were impressed to learn that the students were high schoolers.
Students answered questions from passersby about supermileage and gave them detailed information about the car’s specifications. This was the first opportunity the team had to educate people outside of their community about supermileage and the benefits it has for future motor vehicle technology. However, it was by no means the team’s first time in educating the public as they display their car and answer questions at every home football game, at local parades, and at the county and state fairs.
Students were able to create contacts with many renewable energy resources at the convening, including the MN Department of Commerce, the MN Renewable Energy Society, and the MN Electric Vehicle Owners Club. These resources are being utilized by the GSL YES! Team as they develop this year’s project.
Each year, the Glencoe-Silver Lake YES! Team expands on their previous supermileage project. This year, the team will be making an electric car with a solar powered charging station and are kicking off their project on December 4 during the Winter Workshop hosted at their school.
